Leaving Radio 1

And so it came to pass that Kevin's contract came up for renewal. It wasn't.

On 16 January 2000, Kevin presented his last Radio One show. In a break from the standard show format, in the last half hour, Kevin played some of the sketches from his time at Radio One, with one particular fave from his spoof Aussie soap opera, Strewth Street really standing out.

"When the Police van turned over, your standard issue Australian Police force whistle got lodged up your, eh..."

"Rectum?"

"Well it didn't do 'em any good, the officers won't be using them again, that's for sure...."

It's fair to say, if you get that, you'd have got all of Kevin's humour!

Sadly it was over too quickly. At 10am the end had drawn near, with Kevin playing his last song - The Gigalo Aunts track Where I Find My Heaven. Kevin's reason was simple...

"Last tune, tough one. Nothing especially personal about this except I've been playing it more or less since I arrived at the station and it still reminds me that, for a while back there at least, Radio One was where I found mine."

His last words on the station followed on...

"The Gigalo Aunts, Game Over, Goodbye."

After one final sketch, it was over to Mark Goodier.

That first link (on Mark Goodier's last Sunday show also) is perhaps one of the most complementary things one DJ could possibly say about another as Mark said about Kevin, "One of the best DJs this station has ever had."
